Liao Hui 200kg Clean & Jerk Attempt

It took some time for it to surface, but here it is:

Liao Hui’s 200kg Clean & Jerk attempt (at 69kg) from the 2013 Chinese Nationals.

This was his comeback meet after his ban. He went:

  • Snatch: 151, 161 (Asian record), x166 (1kg above current WR)
  • C&J: 175, 188kg (to win the total), x200 (3kg above the WR at that time)

Translation from what he said in the short video:

In the beginning Liao Hui also subtly mentions that 200kg isn’t too much for someone who has done 210.

The 200kg was already on his chest, and during the Jerk he was like “I’m already the champion” and at that time, people were worrying about me how I was going to injure myself, my coach thought it was no problem.

More: watch his 198kg C&J World Record from the 2013 Worlds.

Thanks to Steve for submitting.

Over at Catalyst Athletics Greg Everett posted a PDF with Weightlifting Strength Standards.

Now this is not the Soviet classification. Greg writes that this is a

classification system based on actual American weightlifting performance and taking into account the particular circumstances of the sport in the US, including the fact that the vast majority of people interested in this kind of chart are starting the sport as adults.

Also check out the Weightlifting Standards Calculator I mentioned earlier.

Powerlifting Strengths Standards can be found here.

Blast from the Past …

It’s like there is a natural law, à la  ”For every current world record there was a Bulgarian lifting more at lighter bodyweight”.

After I posted the 200kg Clean & Jerk attempt at 69kg by Liao Hui, reader Jasha shared this gem.

Angel Genchev (Guenchev) with a Triple Bodyweight Clean & Jerk. 202.5 at 67.5kg from the 1988 Olympics.

Oh, and he also snatched 160kg which was world record too. This originally won him the weight class. Later he was disqualified for testing positive for Furosemide.

Frank Rothwell has a longer video with all his other attempts.

Update 28.02.2014: Vladislav Rigert Jumps 90 kg x 60 cm x 5

(Originally posted Jan 2nd, 2014)

Meanwhile in Egypt …

Last week we saw Norik Vardanian do regular Weighted Squat Jumps. Today Mohamed Ehab shows the Box Jump version.

Update: After his 155kg Snatch from Blocks, he recently got 152kg Snatch from the floor.

Just like Norik, Mohamed also praises the effectiveness of jumps to develop explosiveness.

He does them once per week for 5 sets of 5 reps.

Meanwhile in Russia …

Last time we saw this young gentleman it was with a 115kg Snatch (140kg C&J) at 63kg.

Here is an update from then 15 year old Vyacheslav Yarkin (from November 2013, he is 16 now).

130kg Snatch (if those blue plates are 2.5kg, which I hear is not uncommon in some Russian gyms).

Anyway, he also has a monstrous - neck high - Standing Box Jump

Meanwhile in Egypt …

Mohamed Ehab (69kg) does a Snatch Grip Deadlift Complex.

He does those to keep a tight back throughout all phases of the pull and as you can see, even after 22 reps he never compromises form.

For this one he loads the bar with 155kg, his current Snatch 1RM and does

  • 5x Snatch Grip Deadlift
  • 5x from the hang to below the knee
  • 11x hang pulls / shrugs
  • 1x slow negative to below the knee and a final pull

= 22 reps of back / traps / glutes / hamstring pump goodness.

The Weightlifting World Podcast interviewed David Morgan.

He was 4th twice at the Olympics (’84 and ’88) and won Gold at 5 Commonwealth games.

They talk about his career, his thoughts on British weightlifting (attitude of lifters /funding/ selection process) as well as the alleged corruption of the IWF when it comes to drug tests.

Meanwhile in Russia …

Remember Khetag Khugaev?

Let me help you:

Now at age 16 years he won the Russian U17 Championships 85kg category with 164+196=360!

Let that sink in for a second.

His result was the highest total in the entire competition, including the +94kg (Results PDF). The 2nd in the 85kg totaled 280kg. So Khetag is definitely an outlier, even by Russian standards.

In the competition he went 6/6 with: 145, 155, 164 + 175, 185, 196.

Weightlifting News: Azerbaijani Medalists Disqualified from 2013 Europeans

Five Azerbaijani medalists from the 2013 Europeans have been disqualified and stripped off their medals. (via)

Who? Valentin Hristov (62kg), Silvia Angelova (48kg), Intigam Zairov (94 kg), Sardar Gasanov (69) and Zulfugar Suleymanov (62 kg).

Smells like positive doping tests, but so far their names are not on the IWF sanctioned athletes list.

Screenshot from the IWF 2013 Europeans results page. (Also WTF Igor Bour still listed as #1?)

Azerbaijan Disqualified 2013 Europeans

Zlatan Vanev, the head coach of team Azerbaijan said: “I’m in shock, I do not know what to tell you.”

He did not get any official documents. “This is a complete mystery, because after the Europeans our weightlifters participated in several tournaments without any problems. You know that if there was doping, we would not have been allowed.”

On Tuesday he will meet the officials to get clarity.

I will update this post as more news trickles in.

Meanwhile in Belarus…

Andrei Aramnau may be lifting at the 2014 Europeans. (via)

He told the coaching staff that he wants a last chance and will work in good faith. If there is one breach of discipline he will gather his belongings and team, not to interfere with its preparation.

Meanwhile in Poland …

At a competition in Poland Adrian Zielinski lifted 175+215 weighing in at 95.8kg. (via)

So I guess it’s safe to say that like Apti Aukhadov (and Ilya Ilyin), he also moved up a weight class.
