Still only 19 years old Artem Okulov gets a 190kg Hang Snatch!

Update: I asked Artem about his weight. He was 88kg in the video!

Update: Scroll down for the interview.

Just for reference: the 94kg Snatch World Record still stands at 188kg.

Simply amazing.

Also watch his 180kg Snatch at age 17.

Update: 180kg x2, because why not?

Update: Artem answered some fan questions on vk.

Thanks to Vadim Nikolajev for translating it for us all.

Interview

Q: Are you planning to compete at the junior weightlifting world championships in Kazan this year?

Artem Okulov: What do you think? Of course I will! :)

Q: Are there any injuries bothering you?

Artem Okulov: At this moment, thank god none.

Q: Are you going to compete in European Championships this year?

Artem Okulov: Unfortunately no…This is due to me joining CSKA, meaning Central Sports Army Club, because I am currently serving, I cannot make a new passport, but my old one expired at the time I joined CSKA. So I ask to be understood and forgiven.

Q: What attracted you to weightlifting?

Artem Okulov: Hmmm… What attracted me to this engrossing sport was my father Maxim Okulov, even when I was in kindergarden I went to the gym with him and watched those unreal weights that he lifted and I got hooked. That is how I started lifting weights, and I started training properly when I was 7 years old.

Q: Who do you see as the main rival for the spot in the national team in your category?

Artem Okulov: Of course the main rival – is Apti Aukhadov, but there are other strong guys who I like to compete with, those are Dmitry KhomyakovAlbert Sayakov and Adam Maligov.

Q: Are you ready to battle Apti Aukhadov at the worlds? When are you moving to 94kg category?

Artem Okulov: I think I’ll try to battle with him. No, it’s early for the 94kg category, first I need to realize myself in the 85kg category.

Q: What is your height?

Artem Okulov: I am not very tall, 165 cm. [Gregor: somebody add that to his wikipedia page. Update: thanks to whoever did it]

Q: How do you recover from training?

Artem Okulov: The most important is sleep. I personally need to sleep deeply before a workout and a big part of my recovery are supplements, like BCAA’s, Nitrix etc.

Q: What exercise would you not recommend to do at all?

Artem Okulov: That is a tough question. There is an exercise called Half-Jerks [Video here]. I think there is no point to it… But I think everyone has a different opinion on them. Or Front Rack Holds – I don’t like, but every athlete is individual in this aspect.

Q: Who is your best friend at at the team practise sessions? Do you have a girlfriend?

Artem Okulov: I don’t like categorizing my friends, but there is a friend who is very dear to me – Dima Khomyakov. I don’t have a girlfriend currently.

Q: Not too long ago you snatched the world record 190kg, did the weight come easy to you?
Are you preparing for any competitions in the near future? How intensive are you training sessions currently?

Artem Okulov: The 190 was actually easy, not going to lie :) The next competition are the junior worlds in Kazan. I’m preparing for them. My training sessions right now are very intensive, because I am working on getting more quality weight.

Q: Which weightlifters of the past or future inspire you the most?

Artem Okulov: To be honest I never had an inspiration… with the exception being my father, when he trained with me.

Q: Do you keep a training log? Do you analyze preparations for competitions? Do you think about training sessions, analyze them?Do you do it yourself or the does the coach do it?

Artem Okulov: I do keep a training log, every athlete should have one! I’ll say it this way, there is periodization for every preparation period pre-competition, the coach does this aspect, but the coach also takes into consideration how I feel, so you can say we work together! It is very important to analyze preparations for competitions, because preparation done badly can lead to bad results! Experienced it myself!

Q: How do I get shoulders like yours?

Artem Okulov: Maybe it is my genetics, but there was a time where I did a lot of pressing exercises: like Standing Press, Push Press, Bench Press.

Q: What lifted Total would satisfy you currently?

Artem Okulov: 390 currently would totally satisfy me :)

Q: In which category and at which age did you achieve the norm Candidate of Master of Sports?

Artem Okulov: I was about 46kg and 10 or 9 years old at the time.

Q: If the Russian Federation did not supply you with the needed things for training (gym, salary, etc) for which country would you like to compete at the worlds and the Olympic games?

Artem Okulov: I’m apologizing for this answer beforehand, but I don’t think I could just leave Russia like that.I would do everything to prove that I am worthy of being payed and respected, and even if that didn’t work, I don’t think I would leave Russia.

Q: What is your personal best in the back squat and front squat? If that is not a secret of course.

Artem Okulov: I don’t Front Squat because my back injury starts to bother me, but my back Squat is 270 x2, I wasn’t allowed to do more.

Q: Hello Artem, please recommend me the best exercises for chest, shoulders and lower back. Thank you in advance.

Artem Okulov: (by Vadim: cleaning in russian is “lifting to the chest”) If you meaning lifting to the chest then do more cleans. If you mean training the chest, then of course the bench press. What strengthens the shoulders are Push Press from the front, these train explosiveness and strengthens the shoulders.

The back – is my strong point. When I couldn’t even tie my shoes, I did standing Good Mornings and Deadlifts. The deadlift especially is why I have a strong back. The Romanian Deadlift (RDL) works very well for back also – in my experience.

Q: How do I gain weight?

Artem Okulov: For two years I couldn’t get to 85kg, the most I weighed was 82.50, but then as I aged and my weight jumped up. I started to eat like a pig 5 times a day :) Eat more near night time, if there is any room left in your stomach then add some protein powder.

Q: What exercise do you think are necessary?

Artem okulov: I think necessary are Pulls and Presses.Because overall strength/physical attributes – is a very big part of succes. But you have to work with every athlete individually on movements and body parts.

Q: Do you plan to compete at the olympic games in 2016?

Artem Okulov: I aspire to and will do anything in my strengths to compete in Rio!!

(Originally posted Mar 15, 2014. Jump to the latest update)

Five Azerbaijani medalists from the 2013 Europeans have been disqualified and stripped off their medals. (via)

Who? Valentin Hristov (62kg), Silvia Angelova (48kg), Intigam Zairov (94 kg), Sardar Gasanov (69) and Zulfugar Suleymanov (62 kg).

Zlatan Vanev, the head coach of team Azerbaijan said: “I’m in shock, I do not know what to tell you.”

He did not get any official documents. “This is a complete mystery, because after the 2013 Europeans our weightlifters participated in several tournaments without any problems. You know that if there was doping, we would not have been allowed.”

On Tuesday (18.03.2014) he will meet the officials to get clarity.

I will update this post as more news trickles in.

Update 18.03.2014:  So far there is one report calling it a “Doping Scandal”.

The entire team has been banned from participating in the 2014 European Championships.

In addition, it is expected that the Weightlifting Federation of Azerbaijan will be fined up to 500,000 euros, and Azerbaijani athletes will be disqualified for a period of 2 to 4 years.

Update 19.03.2014 #1: Finally a word from the International Weightlifting Federation.

Accordingly, lifters found positive at the 2013 European Championships and subsequently in out-of-competition testing have been sanctioned and the results of the 2013 Championships have been updated. Both the competitors concerned and the Azerbaijan Weightlifting Federation have received punishment following the sanctions stipulated in the IWF Anti-Doping Policy.

Update 19.03.2014 #2: They are now on the IWF Sanctioned athletes page.

9 Athletes tested positive for Dehydromethyltestosterone. Two year bans for everyone except Zulfuqar Suleymanov, who gets a lifetime ban (unless he pulls an Igor Bour), because this is his 2nd doping violation.

As a consequence Valentin Hristov was also disqualified from the 2013 Worlds.

AZE sanctioned athletes

Update 12.04.2014: New additions to the Sanctioned Athletes page.

The list now shows 18 AZE bans!

Everybody on team Azerbaijan got banned. Among them Firidun Guliyev (194kg C&J at 69kg Jr world record in Poland 2013) and Cristina Iovu who not too long ago switched from Moldova to Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile in Belarus…

Andrei Aramnau may be lifting at the 2014 Europeans. (via)

He told the coaching staff that he wants a last chance and will work in good faith. If there is one breach of discipline he will gather his belongings and team, not to interfere with its preparation.

Meanwhile in Poland …

At a competition in Poland Adrian Zielinski lifted 175+215 weighing in at 95.8kg. (via)

So I guess it’s safe to say that like Apti Aukhadov (and Ilya Ilyin), he also moved up a weight class.

Lidia Valentin Day in a Life

Here is a day in a life of the 2014 European 75kg champion, Lidia Valentin.

I think it’s targeted towards the non weightlifting crowd, but I think Lidia fans will still enjoy it.

With my crappy Spanish skills I got that she has a 70/30 carbs / protein mix after training, but that’s about it.

Update: Gracias a Juan for translating. (Scroll down for the translation)

From Juan: At last! Finally I can contribute to the world of weightifting. The documentary, as you say, it is not very technical and meant for the general public, but this is the overview:

Sign outside weightlifting gym:

“They call it luck, but it is consistency. They call it coincidence, but it is discipline. They call it genetics, but it is sacrifice”

Her training is very routinary (she is preparing for the European championship at the time of the filming):

  • 9am – start of morning training;
  • 1pm – end of morning training;
  • (she then showers, eats and has a nap)
  • 5pm – start of evening training;
  • 7.30-8pm – end of evening training
  • (she then goes to the spa to relax)
  • 9pm – Eats dinner
  • 11pm – she is sleeping

She started by chance when she was 11 years old. She was very sporty (did all kinds of sports) and the weightlifting coach saw her and suggested to try the sport. Her mother was opposed to it initially as it was a very manly sport and she was just 11 years old, but after she saw that she really enjoyed it she accepted it.

She comments that you need a good physique, ability, flexibility and good technique to get results in weightlifting.

She then talks and explains a snatch, saying how it is the more technical and complicated of the two movements. Then she talks and explains the clean and jerk.

Goals:

She wants to be in the high performance programme (“Alto Rendimiento”: a Spanish programme for elite athletes) until 2016, when she will turn 31.

After that she doesn’t know depending on how she feels, whether she achieves international medals and keeps the same level as she has at the minute; but officially her objective is 2016.

Massage Guy (Sergio):

She goes to have a massage because of muscle overload/soreness on the dorsal and lumbar area of her back.

Sergio comments how these type of soreness is common amongst weightlifters and he treats them every day to take out all the muscular tensions before the second training session of the day. He says that Lidia tends to have recurring tension accumulating in the sacro-lumbar region of her back.

Protein Shake:

70% carbs / 30% proteins – Essential for to replenish the wear from the first training session (ED: you got it right Gregor!)

Snatch Sequence:

Sequence of her 122 kgs snatch from the Worlds in November where she got the bronze medal. She is very proud of it and calls it her super snatch, which she dedicated to her coach Matias

Matias (Lidia’s coach):

He has trained her from the age of 15, since she arrived at the High Performance Centre.

Her Room:

She lives in the Joaquin Blume residence in the Centre of High Performance (CAR = Centro de Alto Rendimiento; its abbreviation in Spanish).

Only the elite sportsmen/women live there, those that are subsidised by grants from the Spanish sports federation.

She also has an ADO grant (Asociacion de Deportes Olimpicos = Olympic Sport Association) and two other funding awards from the regional government of Castilla Leon (the region from where she is from in Spain).

It depends on the level of the sportsman/woman but in her case these grants and allow her to dedicate 100% to olympic weightlifting, without the need to find a job.

Medals:

The most valuable items in her room. She shows her medals when she was silver in the European Championship, gold in the Mediterranean Games, gold in the national championship, bronze at the Worlds and gold at the Grand Prix (President Cup in Russia)

In 20 Years Time:

She says that she sees herself in 20 years having her own business, which will have to do with sports, including personal training and sports training.

She then goes and have dinner with the other girls :)

Meanwhile in China …

The Chinese weightlifting nationals for women are currently going on.

And there have already been some great performances.

Most notably by Zhang Wanqiong in the 53kg category.

She went 6/6 with

  • Snatch: 98, 100, 102 (lift is at 21:55 in the video)
  • Clean & Jerk: 122, 125, 129 (lift is at 51:20 in the video)

So her Total is 1 kg  over the current World Record (currently at 230kg).

As with most national meets this does not count as an official world record, even though the athletes were drug tested after the competition.

Here is the video of the competition. Results scoreboard photo.

The 48kg was won by Tian Yuan. She did 88 + 116. Video here.

69kg: Video. The winner got 122+140.

Upcoming: Looking forward to seeing Yue Kang, who snatched 130kg and C&J’ed 160kg at 75kg.

Correction: I first wrongly identified the lifter as Li Yajun, and later fixed the error thanks to commenter Michael who noticed it.
