From the 2014 Worlds Training Hall

Here is a 140kg Front Squat Double by Deng Mengrong (58kg, China).

In the press conference the 24 year old mentioned that her best Front Squat is 150kg and that she only weighs 57kg in training.

She won the 58kg category without winning either the Snatch or the Clean & Jerk. She went 102, 104 and 105 in the Snatch and only made her Clean & Jerk opener at 130kg.

Here is Deng Wei‘s 142kg Clean & Jerk from the Almaty 2014 World Championships that won her the 63kg category.

(Video also on Facebook and Instagram @atginsta)

She had a rough start into the competition, missing her first Snatch attempts at 110k (dropping it forward). In the press conference the 21 year old, who started weightlifting at age 10, said that she very nervous before the 3rd attempt. Luckily she made it and stayed in contention for the overall title. Remember that at last year’s worlds she bombed in the Clean & Jerk (then 58kg).

In the Clean & Jerk she went 3/3 with 130, 136, 142kg, almost fainting after that all out attempt. This earned her the first Chinese gold in the 63kg since 2007.

She was one of the many athletes who also competed six weeks earlier at the Asian Games. Later it was also reported that she arrived in Almaty suffering from a fever.

Kim Tuan Thach Profile (Jr Snatch World Record Holder)

Rarely do you ever hear or see something about Vietnamese lifters. So here is a profile on the 56kg Worlds Silver Medalist and Junior Snatch World Record Holder – Kim Tuan Thach.

Thanks to reader Minh for the translation below.

Translation

[0:40]

MC introduces Thach Kim Tuan, who shined in SEA GAMES 2013. He then introduces Ms Vietnam 2013 as a guest. I don’t feel like translating the next segment, since it’s more about her

[5:10]

It shows the “Athletic Training Center Phu Tho”. This is the training center for national WL athletes in Ho Chi Minh city. 7 years ago, there was a young little boy who came here requesting to train WL. And now, he has brought many glorious victories for Vietnam. This is the place, day after day, where he seeks out perfection. This is Thach Kim Tuan.

He was born in a poor family with 4 kids in rural Vietnam. Before joining WL, all the Thach children were weak, with poor health, and the possibility of them being athletic is slim.

Despite being poor, Tuan’s oldest sister took extra responsibilities to take care of her younger siblings. She stopped going to school in grade 6, taking up odd jobs to make ends meet.

In 2006, Thach Kim Tuan and his older brother, Thach Kim Anh were encouraged by their friend to go lift some weights. To Tuan and Anh, they thought of WL as a means to escape poverty. Through some luck, they met Coach Huynh Huu Chi.

[6:26]

Coach Huynh Huu Chi: My athlete, Nguyen Duc Thang, born 1989, told me that next to his poor apartment, there are 2 brothers who would like to take up weightlifting. So then I took a taxi ride from this training center to where the Thach brothers lived. This was in 2006.

I met the two brothers. Although they were smaller in stature, but their bodies were solid. After some examination, I realized that they were strong and agile, so I agreed to take them as my students.

[7:08]

Thach Kim Tuan: A friend in my neighbourhood asked me if I wanna take up weightlifting. I said sure, let’s try it out. A week later, coach (Huynh Huu Chi) came to our house and accepted us in. I was so happy. I didn’t have to pay training fees, and also I got some stipends so I can help out my family.

At first, coach only let me practice with a stick, ensuring I got the right position, flexibility and can hold the tension in those positions. Only after I was consistent in positions, then I got to work with the barbell.

[7:44]

Coach Chi: When Tuan and Anh started, I also had 2 other new athletes. After 3 months, Anh stopped because he couldn’t handle the training program. After two years, the other 2 athletes left. So only Tuan remained.

At first, he was unpredictable. But one thing about him was consistency. If there were 2 sessions a day, he could handle it. If there was only one session in the morning, then he would finish the session, then took the bus home.

Secondly, he didn’t talk much (* see footnote 1). It was hard to tell whether he was tired, sad, depressed. He handled the training very easily, no matter the intensity/frequency/volume. He also understood the techniques and training principles very well.

[8:35]

Tuan: at first, training was tiring and heavy. After a while, my body got stronger.

Overall, coach was very supportive and encouraging for me and my training. I never skipped a practice. He rarely yelled at me. He only yelled at me if I made a mistake after being told numerous times that day. If I made a mistake once that day, he only reminded me.

[9:05]

Coach: After 1 year and a few months, I took Tuan to a competition: National Youth Championship. It was his first competition, competing at 50kg. He took 2 silver medals.

[9:17]

Narration: Tuan’s beginning was very difficult. But after 7 years of training, his medal collection is near 100, impressive for any athlete. But to him, it’s all just the start of his journey, therefore he always strives for perfection, in a sport that helped him change his life.

In this little modest house in Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, this is where he lives his daily life. He bought the house in 2012, with the money rewarded from weightlifting achievements after years of his family living in a small rental property.

At 3 years old, Tuan’s mother passed away due to a traffic accident. Because life was so tough, the 5 siblings rented a small room in Go Vap District, and the oldest sister took lots of odd jobs to raise her younger siblings.

[10:21]

The camera shows the food Tuan would eat at home. Very unassuming I guess?

[10:32]

Thach Giang Huong (oldest sister): life was tough. Our father was an alcoholic, drunk all day. He beat our mother often. After a while, she couldn’t take it anymore, and she took the 5 siblings to Ho Chi Minh City to live. She left 1 sibling to our dad.

We went to Ho Chi Minh City when Tuan was 1, and our mother passed away when he was 3, 1997. When she passed away, I was only 15. I was thinking of dying with her, because I love her so much. But then I thought of my younger siblings, they wouldn’t have anyone to take care of them. So they were the reason for my life, I live to take care of them.

[11:16]

Tuan: Growing up, my mom passed when I was so young, I don’t have a clear memory of her, but to this day I still miss her lots. My friends normally go home after school, and call “mom”. But for me, after school, I have no mother to call “mom” but my oldest sister is like a mother to me. She always takes care of me.

[11:49]

Huong (oldest sister): When Tuan started winning the first three medals, we got 1.5mil Vietnamese dong ($70 USD) for each. I used that money plus some of mine to buy a scooter for Tuan so that he can ride that to training everyday. Because before that, taking the bus was long and uncomfortable.

[12:03] The camera shows the inside of the training facility.

Narrator: the path to success hasn’t always been smooth. There were many difficulties in certain stages of his development. There were many injuries due to training, to the extent the doctors told him to stop training. But with the encouragement of his family and friends, he overcame the obstacles.

[12:29]

Coach Chi: I always notice: Tuan is very calm in competitions. Another thing about him, and it’s not just weightlifting, from soccer, Sepak Takraw (I highly suggest you guys youtube this sport), he always shows speed and agility.

This has a lot of carryover for him, therefore he’s really good with the Snatch. In the Clean & Jerk, he’s not weak, but as he’s growing taller, it’s harder for him to stand up with heavier weights. Once he can stand up from the Clean, his Jerk is very stable and efficient.

Because of his tenacity, he managed to do 140kg Clean & Jerk in his third attempt in the Youth Championship, beating the Chinese athlete.

[I skipped the next segment because the MC asks Miss Vietnam what she thinks of him. Typical answer stuff.]

[15:12]

Narrator: every athlete in competitions always wants to win the gold medal, and the financial reward, but success was not always for the majority of people. Coach Chi has been working with Tuan through thick and thin, since his beginning.

[15:34]

Coach Chi: 2011 was a successful year for Tuan, where he won Jr Asian Championships, as well as Jr World Championships. In Asian Jr Championship, he broke 3 Jr World Records . And some of these records have stood since 2005. Tuan Snatched 127kg, and Clean & Jerked 153kg.

Video: Here is his 134kg Snatch (2nd attempt) from Worlds. His 135kg Jr WR here.

[15:58]

Pham Hong Dao (53kg lifter, totaled 160kg as a youth lifter): In training, Tuan is very pleasant and easy going. If there are young new lifters who don’t know anything, Tuan usually helps them.

[16:07]

Coach Chi: This boy has good personality. He rarely argues with anyone. After becoming famous, his personality never changed. There are lifters that are his senior (been lifting in the facility longer than him) who are not as established and successful.

If they give him tips, pointers and if he can’t take it anymore, he will stay quiet and go to another platform to practice. He never brags and pulls achievement as a way to win arguments, and he never picks side, or forms clichés. He never bullies anyone, but bullying him is impossible.

kim-tuan-ankle-warm-up-w800

[17:05]

This goes back to the recording studio, where the MC and Miss Vietnam interview him. Some generic statement like they are proud of him, and Miss Vietnam asked him how he can lift so heavy (D’UH????).

He said he started out small, with just broomstick to ensure joint and tendons are good to go in certain positions. Then I will get to use the barbell, doing Pulls and Presses. After a few years, after my body got used to weightlifting, only then coach allowed me to go heavy.

Upon being asked, he said Miss Vietnam won’t be able to handle weightlifting. He said the government recruits kids to get into weightlifting.

Here’s his normal training day:

  • 0730: breakfast
  • 0800: warm-up starts
  • 0900: lift
  • 1200: lunch , nap
  • 1500: lift till 1800

He goes over his Diet and Budget:

Every month, the government gives him 6 mil VND (about $280 USD). It averages out about 200 000 VND ($9 USD) a day. After I buy the meats (beef, chicken, pork etc), I spend the rest to buy protein shakes to consume right after training.

Miss Vietnam says eating too much will lead to weight gain, he talks about weight management and weight cutting for competition.

MC asks him about difficulties, and if he has ever thought of quitting. Tuan said his life was full of difficulties, that’s why he turned to weightlifting. I was happy to be accepted into weightlifting and be able to help my family.

Also, I am proud of representing Vietnam internationally. So for me, growing up, I always just practice, never thought about quitting.

He lives a simple life. Goes to practice, goes home. Goes to competitions, wins and gets awarded. All his financial reward, he gives to his oldest sister. She is the biggest motivator to him. Also, he quit going to school at grade 6 to get into weightlifting.

He has been encouraged by his coach and teammates to pursue education so that he can be a coach after his career.

*1: in Vietnamese culture, quite stoic resiliency is considered a very manly trait.

Dmitry Berestov & Dmitry Klokov Training Session in Chekhov *Translation Added*

Earlier this week Dmitry Klokov and Dmitry Berestov had a little private training session in the national training center in Chekhov.

They are not going too heavy (170kg pause Snatch though), but it’s nice to see a tour of the facility (click here for a tour of David Rigert’s Weightlifting Academy in Taganrog).

Update: Read the translation by Sergiy Turchyn below. Lots of interesting things in there!

Translation

Dmitry arrived to Chekhov to film something with Dmitry Berestov for another project. A lot has changed since he was here for the last time.

Chehkov facility tour:

1:15 – 3 posters with Russian athletes

1:31 – Video cameras to watch the training hall (“to prevent the athletes from fooling around”)

1:30-2:00 – Dmitry notices that there are cameras everywhere. Wonders why.

2:05 – The gym itself. There are no bars because the gym recently hosted a competition. You can see the bars in the warm up room a few seconds later.

3:10 – Dmitry meets another Dmitry [while a third Dmitry is filming both of them]. Dmitry Berestov is lifting for the first time in the last 3 weeks. He is at 98.9 kg bodyweight (bodyweight PR for him in a while). The last time he was below 100 was in 2001. They discuss Berestov’s junior competitions. Berestov confirms that he is retired.

7:37 – Dmitry Berestov talks about his life. He has two sons: 2.5 and 7 years old. Officially Berestov is a director of Children and Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve in weightlifting. The school teaches children from 10 years old. Dmitry came to the school at 10 years old himself as a weightlifter and is now the director of the same school.

9:00 – They talk about the new Moldavian Marcel Guidea. Dmitry Berestov does not want to talk about him being a potential star.

“You need to show yourself in competition. Today you are gifted and tomorrow you don’t lift your weight in competition.” Dmitry Betestov helped Marcel with living. In Europeans Marcel lifted some good weight and Dmitry Berestov sees the potential for him to be in men’s team (but mentioning the previous note that the platform will decide everything).

Klokov’s reply: “This guy is probably lifting more than we can do right now.” Note that Marcel just became a 105 very recently and is a new to this weight class.

11:17 – Dmitry Klokov tells that many people want to do a dynamic start. He is usually against that because novices do not have enough muscle memory and it will hurt their form. Dmitry Berestov used to use static start until he [not sure if exact translation here] started losing the bar backward.

12:05 – Dmitry Berestov shows both types of dynamic start. They discuss how Dmitry Klokov is thinking about being above the bar during the 1st pull while Dmitry Berestov does not think about it at all. Berestov is thinking about standing on the middle of the foot.

14:30 – Klokov asks about Snatch weight difference with/without straps. Both of them don’t have any. Dmitry mentions that this is because they both train their grip and he will tell how either on New Year or 2 days after.

15:15 – The most popular sport in Malaysia is badminton (from local’s perspective). [This was the question of the last video’s quiz]

16:44 – Klokov pause Snatch 160 kg. He mentions that Dmitry Berestov is much less amazed at this “porn” [regarding the snatch technique] as people on seminars would be. Then gives a motivational sentence: “If you sit on your couch and don’t do weightlifting, you missed a lot!”

17:22 – Berestov 140 Snatch fail (the same weight he lifted 3 weeks ago). Berestov: “Cut this out.”

Lena: “Dmitry [Klokov] does not know how to edit videos. He will put everything out.”

Klokov: “This may be the first time when I edit the video.” [I guess it is not]

19:00 – Berestov 140 snatch attempt 2. Berestov (while setting up): “If I fail again, I will start screaming like you.”

19:30 – The next (10th) Berestov’s competition (he is the host) is January 16-18. Klokov will lift there on January 16th in this same hall (“I will show you some porn again [regarding technique] because I will come straight from Greece seminar.”).

20:36 – Klokov 170 Pause Snatch

22:55 – Dmitry Klokov goes to show his bodyweight (“Some people say I am 115 or even more.”). 109.5. This was in clothes and shoes. Berestov is 100.5. Klokov’s bodyweight PR is 122, Berestov’s is 114.

24:31 – Dmitry Berestov’s PRs:

  • 160 Overhead Press (2009-2010, when he was injured to do some other lifts)
  • 205 Snatch
  • 240 Clean and Jerk
  • 250 Clean
  • 280 Front Squat
  • 325 Back Squat
  • 350 Clean Pull
  • 190 Bench Press
  • 50 back extensions (joke question). Berestov also does them before and after training sessions, just like most Russians to keep back healthier.

26:00 – Klokov notices that Berestov’s elbows are lower than other people’s in the rack position.

Berestov says that this may be a mistake and everyone should find their own position. Klokov thinks that low elbows make novices shift forward in the Jerk. Berestov agrees.

“What happened at 232.5 kg in Athens?” made Berestov laugh because that was his own mistake (video follows at 27:40). Berestov explains that he was already thinking he was a champion and was not properly ready mentally.

29:15 – Klokov explains that the camera ran out of battery in the worst moment possible. They will press far away because of that. “[Pointing at Berestov’s barbell]There are 110 kg here. [Pointing at his barbell]There are 190 kg here. Don’t zoom. Trust me, it is 190.”

29:45 – synchronized Clean and Press (110 for Berestov and 140 for Klokov)

30:23 – “Many will ask why the hell did you both came to Chekhov to train. This will be the most popular question. The person who guesses the answer gets the same T-shirt I am wearing for free.” Berestov “I will give a hint to someone.” They laugh.

30:50 – Dmitry Klokov goes to the new sauna. He loves it.

32:00 – This is not what it looks like. This “table to get drunk at” is actually their massage table.

33:15 – Berestov thanks Klokov and wishes us to train and be happy on the New Year. Invites everyone to his competition where Klokov will compete. There will also be around 240 children. Klokov’s next video will be from his seminar in Irkutsk (his second Russian seminar). Klokov: “And don’t worry about crisis. It is third time we, Russians, are brought to our knees, but we will not give up and we will rise again.”

There were many other jokes made throughout the whole video.

The Barbell Shrugged guys traveled to Sweden and visited the Eleiko headquarters.

First they talk with Eleiko CEO Erik Blomberg and later with Anders Lindsjö.

Notes

  • company was started in 1927
  • produced waffle irons and toasters in the beginning
  • Eleiko in Swedish stands for “Electrical Installation Limited Company”
  • First barbell was developed in 1957, quality steel differentiated it
  • first company to be certified by the IWF
  • Steel from northern Sweden
  • 215 000 PSI (Pound per Square Inch) steel for competition bars
  • bars have hard surface, soft(er) inner part
  • knurling is pressed into the steel, not cut, markings are also pressed so there are no weak points which are vulnerable to breaking
  • every 7 bars the pressing tools have to be replaced
  • first thing they add is the knurling
  • then surface treatment, chrome
  • then come the sleeves, weight calibration
  • Torlerances: can go up to 20020 grams, they are allowed to go lower, but always make sure that they are a couple of grams above 20kg, same tolerances for the discs
  • then they straighten the bar (would have loved to get more info on this)
  • 10 needle bearings in competition bars
  • then follows an intense snatch introduction session lead by Anders “wasn’t good enough, do it again” Lindsjö. Watch him instruct a weightlifting warm-up here.
  • To finish it off they have a discussion with Anders that focuses on teaching philosophy / principles

Here is Ivan Markov’s 179kg Gold Medal Snatch from the 2014 World Championships.

The 26 year old who started weightlifting at age 14 had a perfect run in the Snatch going 174, 177, 179 kg. This gave him a one kilo advantage over Kianoush Rostami from Iran (his 178kg here).

(Video also on Facebook and Instagram @atginsta)

This was also the first gold medal for Bulgaria in the 85kg at the Worlds since Zlatan Vanev won the Clean & Jerk and Total in 2002.

He could have sealed the deal on the over all title in the Clean & Jerk, but after two good attempts at 207 and 211, he missed his last attempt at 214 kg. Later in the press conference he told us that his best C&J is 215kg.

Meanwhile he has already competed twice in German Bundesliga (3 weeks after worlds 170/203, and last weekend 165/203 after having a cold).

Overloading Partial Squats with Slow Descent

Meanwhile in China …

Kirksman from Lifthard.com is in China, learning from the coaches there.

Follow his instagram for updates. He posts stuff about the training philosophy, as well as exercises like the one below.

Overloading the descent of the squat to improve quad strength and back tightness.

This is a 20 year old kid doing a 300kg controlled descent squat. For 2 reps. They have to place the bar back without a sound. This is to improve their back tightness and quad strength. To protect their knees, they stretch the ankles all the time to ensure the hips can sit as closely as possible to the ball of the foot. We are talking knees about 10 miles in front of the toes for maximal protection of knee joint and strength in the quads. I asked them about balance between quad and posterior. They showed me their program and the amount of pulls and posterior isometric/dynamic work. Its right about 50/50. The coach’s programmer (they don’t program it. Another lady upstairs, oh wait till U hear about the lady upstairs’s job) makes sure they have front back left right balance. That’s why they have tons of trunk, TVA work. To ensure no lateral shifting or twisting happens. Even the way they walk is observed. Edit: trust me, there are things I’m extremely challenged to understand or believe at this moment. This is just one of the many. #fitness #lifthard8 #weightlifting #crossfit #squat

Here is a funny moment from the 2014 Worlds Training Hall.

Behdad Salimi testing the structural integrity of a massage table while doing some Back Extensions (Hyperextensions) with the help of Kianoush Rostami and Jaber Behrouzi.

With Kianoush’s 85kg and Jaber’s 69kg that’s a solid 154kg of counterweight.

(Video also on Facebook and Instagram @atginsta)

While the training hall with its 64 brand new eleiko competition sets + platforms was very well equipped, one piece of equipement seemed to be missing – something to do Back Extensions on.

This was the one assistance exercise athletes from every nation were doing at the end of a training session. So athletes and coaches had to be creative and improvise a bit.

Most resorted to using one the massage tables while others (lighter weight classes) just used a chair.
