Simon Martirosyan 183kg Snatch World Record

$

You might have heard of Simon Martirosyan from the Youth Olympics earlier this year when he attempted to break his own Snatch record and set a new Clean and Jerk record. Today at his first senior worlds championships he sets a new world record snatch. He made a gutsy attempt at breaking the total world record by 6kg by making a 220kg clean and jerk but failed both attempts on the jerk.

This video is also watchable on facebook.

Tatiana Kashirina had a grand slam victory at the World Weightlifting Championship 2014 with 5 new World Records!

Her biggest competition was Meng Suping who fell short of the World Records, but got a new competition PR.

Tatiana posted 145kg as her starting weight in the Snatch, continued with 152kg to break her own world record (which she set at the London Olympics) and finished of with 155kg.

In the Clean and Jerk she started with 185kg and raised it to 193kg in order to break Zhou Lulu’s World Record, skipping her third attempt for a total of 348kg and 2 World Records in the Snatch, 1 World Record in the Clean and Jerk and 2 World Records in the Total.

Here is her 193kg Clean & Jerk

(Video also on Facebook)

Trivia:

  • Her breaking her own Total world record by 14 kg (334 to 348) is the biggest margin of any broken world record in any gender since the introduction of the current weight categories in 1998.
  • Kashirina is one of three lifters (either gender) currently holding all three world records in a single weight category, alongside Liu Chunhong (CHN, women’s 69kg) and Liao Hui (CHN, men’s 69kg).

2014 World Championships Highlight

Aleksey Lovchev’s 257kg Gold Medal Clean & Jerk.

Yes he had a bad day in the Snatch (his 195kg Snatch in the warm up area had us hoping for a good session), but this 257kg in my opinion made up for it in my book.

257kg is even 1kg heavier than what he did in the Russian Championships (212 + 256).

Trivia:

  • he became the third Russian lifter to win Clean and Jerk in men’s +105kg,  after Evgeny Chigishev (RUS, 2007) and Chemerkin (1998, 1999)
  • this C&J is the heaviest weight at World Championships since Hossein Rezazadeh’s 263 kg in 2002

Weightlifting News – Video Evidence & International Competitions in North Korea

om-yun-chol-saluteQuick News Update, so we are all on the same page.

Video Evidence to Avoid Judging Errors (via):

Remember when Simplice Ribouem (Australia) was denied a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games because of a judging error? Of course that was just one of the major errors in recent times

Well, the IWF reacted and starting with the 2014 Youth World Championships in Lima, Peru, it will introduce 3 cameras that will provide views from the judges’ line of sight.

North Korea:

North Korea expressed interest in holding international weightlifting competitions on their soil. (via)

While they want to host senior world championships, this is not realistic said Attila Adamfi, director general of the I.W.F. There are still too many obstacles for them to overcome.

At the 2013 Asian Interclub Cup where Om Yun Chol did his 169kg C&J World Record we have seen that they surely can fill an arena (by what means remains unclear though :) ).

“The Great Leader likes all kinds of sports, and especially weightlifting,” said a team official of the country’s dictator, Kim Jong-un. (via)

“The Leader said our weightlifting was very strong, and he enjoyed it,” said Kim. “We have about 900 weightlifters, very good coaches, very good facilities.”

Here is Mohamed Ehab’s 152kg Snatch from the 2014 World Championships.

(Video also on Facebook)

He went 3/3 in the Snatch with 145, 149 and 152 which earned him the Snatch Bronze Medal and is actually pretty close to his training PRs.

The Clean & Jerk didn’t start out as planned as he missed his opner at 177. He came back out for the same weight and nailed it on his second attempt. For his third attempt he increased to 182kg. This lift gave him bodyweight advantage over Kim Myong Hyok from North Korea.

Result: Silver medal in the Total with 334kg! (also Egypian records in Snatch and Total)

My Personal Thoughts:

As many of you know, Mohamed is a personal favorite of mine. I love watching his training videos and really enjoyed following his progress leading up to worlds.

Many people have criticized his creative choice of assistance exercises, but there is not much left to argue about when you can back it up with medals at senior world championships.

Anyway, with his less than perfect training conditions in a country that went through a crisis, to me Mohamed resembles resembles the spirit of weightlifting. I was really happy to see him on the podium.

Here is Ruslan Albegov’s 210kg Snatch from the 2014 World Championships in partial slow mo and realtime.

(Watch his 209kg Snatch from the 2013 Worlds here.)

His Future Plans: First get recover from smaller injuries that crept in. In January he will miss the Russian Cup. After a consultation with his personal trainer Kazbek Zoloeva they will decide what competitions to prepare for. His participation at Europeans will depend on his health and physical condition.

Trivia:

  • he became the first man with consecutive Snatch golds in men’s +105kg at World Championships since Salem in 1999 and 2001.
  • Ruslan equalled Andrei Chemerkin (RUS, 4) for most gold medals among Russian men in the +105kg category. Among all athletes, only Hossein Rezazadeh (IRI, 10) and Jaber Saeed Salem (QAT, 5) have more.

He went for a World record in the Snatch with 166kg and a new total World Record with 359kg at his second Clean and Jerk, he skipped his last attempt.

Check out his 165kg Snatch and 200kg Clean and Jerk at the Chinese test event earlier this year.

Here is one of the World Record Breaking Clean & Jerks from the 105kg Session at the 2014 World Championships.

David Bedzhanyan‘s 240kg, taking back his Clean & Jerk World Record from Ruslan Nurudinov, who took it from him only a minute prior to this lift. Unfortunately for David this record also didn’t last long as Ilya Ilyin crashed the party with his 242 kg Clean & Jerk.

David definitely had the meet of his life in Almaty. Lots of people were doubting his abilities to deliver a medal performance on international stage.

I can’t fathom the mental toughness it must take to open at 225kg, miss his second attempt at 236kg and come back and make a world record weight.

After Ilya’s 242kg and David’s 240kg, here now is the 3rd World Record from the 105kg session at world championchips.

Ruslan Nurudinov’s 239kg Clean & Jerk.

(Video also on Facebook and @atginsta)

He had a flawless 6 out of 6 performance and is also a strong contender for the “Best Celebration” as well as “Best Tongue Show” award.

He went 185, 190, 193 and 220, 230, 239. Which is a 7kg increase to his Total at last year’s worlds.

In the Press conference he mentioned that he was shocked at how well he performed. After his injury (had knee surgery in August) he never went past 215kg in training

Trivia: With his 7 medals, Ruslan is now the most decorated Uzbek at World Championships in any Olympic sport. What’s more? He is only just turned 23, so he has a bright future ahead of him.

Mart Seim 246kg Clean & Jerk Almaty 2014 World Championships

during the 246 my shoulder almost gaveHere is Mart Seim’s 246kg Clean & Jerk from the 2014 World Weightlifting Championships.

This was Mart’s first senior World Championships.

His 431 total would have placed the 24 year old in the top 6 during the last 2 Olympics. Below you can read what happened to Mart before that lift.

(Video also on Facebook and @atginsta)

If you have been following along you know Mart’s training history. He is the type of lifter that leaves big PRs for competitions.

In fact before Almaty he never Clean & Jerked more than 220kg in training. He says this 220 wasn’t a max, but he never tried more (though he Cleaned 230 and Jerked 240 in training). His competition PR prior to Almaty PR was 236kg from the 2014 Europeans.

In the Snatch he opened with 180, got 185 on his second and missed 188 on his third attempt (he did 190kg in training).

mart seim 185kg snatch almaty world championships

Mart told me afterwards that “after the 188kg I felt something happened in my shoulder”. Back in Estonia he was diagnosed with a Bankart Lesion, an injury to the “glenoid labrum of the shoulder due to anterior shoulder dislocation.”. This will require surgery to fix.

After the Snatch, back in the warm up area, he turned on his phone and texted his girlfriend saying that his right shoulder isn’t fine and that he’s more than likely to not come out for the Clean & Jerks.

mart seim warm up area 2014 world championships

But after some warm up attempts he realized that his shoulder is holding up. He had to adjust his Jerk though, now pushing the bar slightly in front.
I know i was capable of these weights
“It wasn’t a good feeling what I had in shoulder.”

So he comes out for his opener at 234 kg and makes it. His main focus was on not making the same mistake as in Europeans, where he missed his opener at 226kg.

Even though this went according to plan Mart was far from relieved. Now it was time to test new waters and attempt weights he had never done before in competition (or in training).

He was confident though. “I know I was capable of these weights. Just had to do all the moves correct, not making the pull too short or use too little leg drive in Jerk. I know I have OK legs [understatement of the year -Gregor] and I must not waste this potential.”

So he comes out for his second attempt at 243 and nails it. For the third attempt they decided to go for 246kg which would give him a 13kg PR in the Total.

mart-246-camera-manDuring the attempt he felt his shoulder give in. In the video you can see him almost losing it in front. Even the camera man in the background was feeling that lift.

Now that it’s all done Mart will take some rest. He hopes the shoulder surgery will leave him without too much time off so he can be ready again for next years worlds and subsequently get in peak shape for Rio.
